CNC Machinist / Toolmaker
CNC machinists use computer-controlled (CNC) machines to make precise metal parts for hydrogen plants and for factories that build vehicle and energy equipment. The link is indirect for now, although South African companies that produce hydrogen count machinists among the maintenance staff they plan to retrain for green hydrogen work.
Jobs in the energy transition
Hydrogen plant maintenance machinist
You'd machine replacement metal parts to repair pumps, compressors and other equipment at a hydrogen production plant.
Machinist for electric vehicle parts
You'd set up and run CNC machines that make precise metal parts in car component factories, some of which already make parts for electric vehicles.
How to get there
The qualifications
There are two certificates, the Occupational Certificate: CNC Milling Machinist and the Occupational Certificate: CNC Turning Machinist, both at NQF Level 4, the same level as Matric, and each one covers one of the skills that make up the full toolmaker trade.
What you need to start
The official minimum is Matric or another NQF Level 4 qualification with Mathematics and Science, or an N3 engineering certificate with Mathematics and Engineering Science.
These are the official minimum requirements, and colleges can set higher ones.
